MIDI Mapping

If toms trigger cymbals, the snare doesn’t respond, or pads play the wrong sound, adjust your MIDI mapping in Beatlii. This guide shows you how to reset your module, create a Custom MIDI Setup, and save it for next time.

Quick tip: Many kits from the same brand share the same mapping. If your exact model isn’t listed, try a similar model first.

Try a Factory Reset (Recommended First)

A factory reset restores your module’s default MIDI notes and often fixes mismatches.

  • Check your drum module manual for Factory Reset instructions

  • Power cycle the module after the reset

  • Test your kit again in Beatlii

Create a Custom MIDI Setup in Beatlii

1) Open Drum Module Setup
  • Go to Drum Module Setup → User MIDI Setup

  • Tap Create MIDI Setup

2) Map Each Pad
  • Hit a pad on your e-kit

  • Tap the instrument you want it to trigger in Beatlii (e.g., Snare, Kick, Crash)

  • Repeat for every pad (toms, hi-hat closed/open, ride, etc.)

  • The current MIDI note is shown at the top as you hit each pad

  • Manually change MIDI notes by tapping the edit/pencil icon in the top right corner of the screen. This allows you to directly assign MIDI notes instead of triggering them by hitting pads

  • You can add multiple MIDI notes per instrument, useful if two pads should trigger the same sound or when a pad has multiple layers (e.g., snare rim and head, or ride bell, edge and bow)

3) Save Your Preset
  • Tap Save Preset to save your mapping

  • Your preset will load automatically next time

  • On the next screen, tap Continue and you are ready to play

Troubleshooting Tips

  • Duplicate Pads: Some kits send the same MIDI note from two pads. First, try a factory reset on your drum module to restore the default mapping. If the issue remains, adjust the MIDI mapping manually and preferably reset it to General MIDI note values

  • Velocity Curves: If dynamics feel off, check the velocity settings on your drum module

  • Hi-Hat Behavior: Hi-hat systems vary by brand. If open/closed feels wrong:

    • Make sure you mapped Closed and Open hi-hat correctly

    • Some modules send foot splash as a separate note, map that too if available

    • Re-calibrate your module’s hi-hat if the manufacturer provides that option

When to Contact Us

If you can’t get a consistent mapping:

  • Send your brand & model and describe which pads are wrong to support@beatlii.com

  • We’ll help and work on adding a preset for your module
